CHICAGO — The dreams weren’t so sweet for Twins outfielder Denard Span on Monday night. “I had a couple flashbacks of what happened,” he said.
And he wasn’t 100 percent when he ventured out of the team hotel in downtown Chicago to grab lunch.
“Definitely a little foggy,” he said.
One day after a Randy Williams fastball hit him in the back of his helmet, Span experienced occasional headaches and could still feel where the ball hit him. It was a no-brainer to keep him out of the lineup Tuesday night against the White Sox; he will be checked out again today.
Span had appeared in every game since coming off the disabled list June 25 and made every start since July 21. He said he wants to play in tonight’s series finale against the White Sox, but no one is sure that will happen.
“Just think it’s better to give him a blow here,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Give him a day and let him regroup. It’s hard to play the game clearheaded. And to play with something like that . . .”
Oswalt seeks second opinion
HOUSTON — Astros ace Roy Oswalt will visit orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Dossett in Dallas on Thursday to get a second opinion on the pitcher’s sore back.
Oswalt (8-6, 4.12 ERA) reported discomfort in his arm after pitching five-plus innings in a no-decision against Cincinnati on Sept. 15. He has been bothered by hip and back pain for much of the season, and the team said after the start that Oswalt wouldn’t pitch again this season.
Also, reliever Alberto Arias will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. Denver Post wire services
