A woman was gunned down early this morning in a business parking lot in northeast Denver, police said.

The fatal shooting happened at about 3:30 a.m. at 2535 E. 40th Ave., outside an AT&T building, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman.

Witnesses saw an unidentified woman standing near a silver or gray sport utility vehicle talking to someone inside the vehicle before “muffled shots” were heard, Jackson said. Workers rushed to the woman’s aid, and the SUV sped off from the lot.

The woman died at the scene.

The identity of the victim and more details of the fatal shooting could be released later today.
