The three federal officials who oversee terrorism-fighting efforts within the United States will address the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Denver on Monday.

Scheduled to speak at the IACP’s 2009 national convention are FBI Director Robert Mueller, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Mueller and Napolitano appeared at a Senate hearing today where Mueller testified that “credible intelligence” indicates that al-Qaeda still wants to attack the United States here and abroad.

Mueller said other extremist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda have embraced al-Qaeda’s vision of a violent jihad and may launch attacks inside the United States.

The officials will address the police chiefs at the Denver Convention Center.

The conference is scheduled to run Saturday through Wednesday and is expected to draw more than 12,900 participants.

Among the topics that have been addressed in the past at the conferences are terrorism, multinational policing efforts, the application of community-oriented policing, and technological advances in crime and crime-fighting.

The IACP is the world’s oldest and largest nonprofit membership organization of police executives, with more than 20,000 members in at least 89 countries, according to its website.

In 2002, the Denver Police Department made a bid to host this year’s convention; Denver was chosen following an extensive selection process.
