Greeley teachers rejected their district’s latest contract offer, becoming the third Front Range district still without a contract for the 2009-10 school year.
“We have never had three locals at crisis level in their bargaining this late in the year,” said Colorado Education Association spokeswoman Deborah Fallin in a statement released Tuesday.
Boulder Valley and St. Vrain teachers also are without new contracts.
Boulder’s teachers union last month filed paperwork with the state that is a preliminary step before calling a strike. St. Vrain teachers are entering the fact-finding stage with the district.
In Greeley, the district offered no annual step increases or cost-of-living raises. Instead, the district offered to pay for increased retirement and insurance costs.
“To meet the union’s requests, the district would need to lay off current employees, including some teachers themselves,” said Greeley school board president Bruce Broderius.
