A man who supervised a New York City police unit that solved hundreds of cold-case homicides will address a gathering of family members of homicide victims today.

Vito Spano will discuss how New York’s cold-case unit was formed and what kind of detectives qualified, at a time when Colorado is forming a cold-case unit, said Howard Morton, executive director of Families of Homicide Victims and Missing Persons.

Spano, who is retired, supervised a unit that made more than 1,300 arrests.

About 330 people are planning to attend the conference today at the Red Lion Hotel, 4040 Quebec St. The group promotes efforts to solve more than 1,400 cold-case homicides in Colorado dating back to 1970.
