Start of the Friends of Berthoud Pass avalanche awareness classes for the 2009-10 season; first class in Colorado Springs; Bob Tomsky, former Berthoud Pass Ski Patrol avalanche training director, provides backcountry travelers with 2 1/2-hour classroom overview of avalanche awareness, avoidance, rescue and forecasting methods, skills; classes Nov. 6 in Denver, Nov. 10 (Boulder), Nov. 11 (Golden), Nov. 14 (Breckenridge), Nov. 18 (Boulder), Nov. 19 (Golden), Dec. 9 (Winter Park), Dec. 15 (Denver), Jan. 6 (Winter Park), Jan. 14 (Denver), Feb. 6-7 (on Berthoud Pass snow); open to the public; $5 minimum donation; 7 p.m.

• Road rides each weekend in the south Denver area hosted by Highlands Ranch Cycling Club; intermediate to advanced; 2 to 5 hours; helmet required; free.
• Road ride each Saturday morning led by the staff of Bicycle Pedal’r bike shops in Highlands Ranch; 20 to 30 miles; weather permitting; open to intermediate and advanced riders.
RUNNING
Oct. 25
U.S. Marine Corps Memorial 5K fun run and walk; at Jefferson County Courthouse in Golden; participants receive T-shirt and dog tags; $25; 9 a.m.
