Four residents were honored Monday by the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority for their life-saving and caring actions, including Walter “Trey” McClendon, 15.
He was cited for his bravery in alerting and helping to evacuate the sleeping members of his household after he noticed smoking rising from the deck outside his window late Aug. 22. The house was heavily damaged, but none of the five people inside was hurt.
McClendon is a sophomore at Grandview High School. A fire investigator said that if McClendon had delayed even a minute, the outcome could have been very different.
Also recognized by the rescue authority were:
• Stephanie Scavuzzo of Parker, who provided lifesaving CPR to her 12-year-old son after he received an electric shock on July 16.
• Jeff Hannah and Rebecca Schmitt of Centennial, who stopped to help a driver who had slid off an icy road and into the bed of Little Dry Creek on March 10.
