AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Air Force coach Troy Calhoun remained evasive on his choice at quarterback for Saturday’s home game against Wyoming, but he did say Tim Jefferson looked more recovered from an ankle injury than he has over the last three weeks.
“He was better,” Calhoun said, stopping short of saying that Jefferson had his best practice since injuring his right ankle four games ago at New Mexico. “In order to play well on Saturday, you have to be a buster in practice. I saw a little more of that, but you have to be that way, especially at the quarterback position. We’ll see how we do (today).”
Quarterback Connor Dietz, who finished the New Mexico game and started two of the next three games, shared reps with Jefferson during practice.
“I really don’t have any idea,” Dietz said when asked if he’s starting. “Everything is day to day. That’s the way I approach it. Our practices are so highly intense that it doesn’t matter what reps you’re taking.
“Every one (repetition) is so key, and it gets you ready for Saturday. When the coaches think it’s best to make the decision, I trust in them.”
If Dietz gets the call, Calhoun would like to see him get off to a faster start. In Dietz’s starts against San Diego State and Texas Christian, the Falcons scored one offensive touchdown in the first half.
“The other night, I thought the last two and a half quarters he played solid football,” Calhoun said. “From here on out, you’re going to have to have our quarterback play really well for four quarters. He needs to throw better in games.”
After six games, Jefferson has completed 57.5 percent of his 40 passes, with an interception and two touchdowns. Dietz has completed 40.7 percent of his 27 passes, with no interceptions and one touchdown. Dietz has gained 241 yards on the ground with one touchdown, while Jefferson has 91 yards and two TDs.
Position switch.
The Falcons have moved freshman Cody Getz from receiver to tailback, where he will play behind Asher Clark and Savier Stephens. Getz has played in five games and has 25 yards on four carries.
