COMMERCE CITY — If you ask any of the regulars at 80th Avenue Liquors, they will tell you it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Forty-six-year-old Robert lives with his sister and her family. He calls the time with them a fortunate gift during some years of misfortune.

Two years ago, doctors diagnosed Robert with a type of cancer that started in his kidneys and spread to his bones. He has been taking chemotherapy and so far his body is responding well.

After the diagnosis, Robert lost his job washing dishes at a Denver hotel. Then he lost his apartment.

Almost every day since he moved into his sister’s house, Robert has enjoyed a morning walk to 80th Avenue Liquors in Commerce City. He always buys two things: a soda and a lottery ticket.

9News isn’t revealing Robert’s last name to protect his privacy until he meets with some lawyers and financial advisors. 9NEWS did verify his ticket matched all the numbers for the $5.4 million prize. It has a cash value of $2.7 million.
