DENVER—A union representing Denver sheriff’s deputies has tentatively agreed to delay deputies’ pay raises scheduled for next year, pending a vote by members next week.
Mayor John Hickenlooper has been trying to close a $160 million budget deficit in the city’s general fund from last July through 2010. The tentative agreement would save the city $2.5 million next year.
It would delay a 4.5 percent raise scheduled in 2010 until Dec. 19, 2010, and deputies’ contract with the city would be extended two years. Deputies couldn’t be laid off or furloughed during that time.
Deputies would get a 3 percent raise in December 2011 and another 3 percent raise in July 2012.
Police and firefighters agreed earlier to delay pay raises.
