A 17-year-old is in serious but stable condition at Denver Health Medical Center after being hit by a freight train at 1:01 a.m. today in Commerce City.
“We think he is going to make it, but he does have serious injuries all over his body,” said Lt. Chuck Saunier, spokesman for the Commerce City Police Department.
Saunier said the crew of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train spotted the juvenile lying on the tracks and immediately applied the train’s brakes.
“They did everything they should have done,” said Saunier.
The juvenile is from Commerce City and was under the train when officers reached the scene in the 7600 block of Colorado 2.
He said the young man was conscious but unable to speak when police and medical personnel reached him.
Police so far have not been able to question him.
“We don’t know if he was drunk, had been placed there, was sleeping or if it was a suicide attempt,” said Saunier. The investigation is continuing.
The Commerce City Police Department is asking that any witnesses with information call the department at 303-287-2844.
The name of the juvenile is not being released until his family is notified.
