MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Uruguay’s last dictator, Gregorio Alvarez, was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday for 37 homicides in the late 1970s.
Alvarez, 83, was commander-in-chief of the armed forces and later led Uruguay’s military regime from 1981 to 1984.
He was accused in the disappearance of political prisoners seized by military rulers in neighboring Argentina and clandestinely returned to Uruguay as part of “Operation Condor,” which had secret help from U.S. intelligence services.
Alvarez was not in court Thursday for health reasons.
