ASPEN — The 20-year-old man who was found dead in a hot tub Wednesday morning probably drowned, a coroner said Thursday.

Daniel Isaac Mares of Westminster is believed to have been in the hot tub at the Prospector Condominiums, located in downtown Aspen, for about two hours before he was discovered, said Pitkin County Deputy Coroner Jennifer Diamond.

The findings are preliminary and not considered official, Diamond said.

“We believe it was a drowning,” she said. “That’s where it’s headed.”

Mares was a 2007 graduate of Westminster High School. He had been in Aspen working for a Front Range firm that specializes in the installment of high-end blinds, police said.

Police said they received a 911 call about Mares, who was reportedly unconscious and not breathing, at 11:29 a.m. Thursday. Attempts to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillation were not successful, police said.

Results of a toxicology report will be available in about three to four weeks, Diamond said.
