TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Negotiators trying to resolve the Honduran political crisis said Friday that talks have been broken off, the third such announcement in the past week.
The interim government declared the negotiations collapsed hours after making a new offer to the delegation representing ousted President Manuel Zelaya, which had set a midnight deadline for an agreement to reinstate the deposed leader.
John Biehl, a special envoy for the Organization of American States sent to Honduras to facilitate the dialogue, said “for us the suspension of the talks is a break, a time for reflection.” Biehl said he would return to Washington to consult with the OAS on how to better help the situation in Honduras.
