DENVER—King Soopers is warning its employees they could be locked out if workers at Safeway decide to strike.

King Soopers told employees Thursday that a lockout would be necessary to protect its business.

Workers at both stores are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 but only Safeway workers have authorized a strike. Meanwhile, Kroger, which owns King Soopers and City Market stores, and Safeway have agreed to mutual negotiations with the union.

Negotiations resumed this week but soon broke down.

If there is a Safeway strike, the union maintains that King Soopers could just negotiate separately with King Soopers workers.
