GOLDEN, Colo.—A Jefferson County SWAT team shot and killed a man after sheriff’s officials say he pointed a gun at them when they entered his home to end a standoff.

Jefferson County Sheriff spokeswoman Jacki Kelley says the 34-year-old man had refused to come out of his house for several hours and had been shooting inside the home. Kelley says authorities responded to the man’s house after his mother called police at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday to report that her son was upset and had fired a gun in his room.

The mother wasn’t home at the time.

Kelley says negotiations had fallen apart by about 12:45 a.m. Friday when SWAT officers decided to enter the home.

The man was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name has not been released.

Authorities will investigate the shooting.
