The Colorado Judicial Branch will relocate the state’s two highest courts to The Denver Post Building next year.
The Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court will take the entire eighth floor of the building at 101 W. Colfax Ave.
Retail space on the ground floor will be converted into a courtroom and a law library.
“We are in final contract discussions for that space,” confirmed Rob McCallum, spokesman for the Colorado Judicial Branch.
The courts will begin remodeling the space in early January, with judges and staff scheduled to move in next spring.
But the move isn’t permanent. The state plans to complete a new justice center by the spring of 2013 on the block where court offices and the Colorado History Museum are now located on 14th Street between Broadway and Lincoln Street.
The Office of the State Court Administrator has already leased the building’s fifth floor, housing about 200 employees in space the Rocky Mountain News occupied until it ceased operations in February.
“This move is consistent with our ongoing efforts to consolidate our operations to reduce expenses and increase efficiency and profitability,” said Denver Post president Jerry Grilly.
