BOULDER, Colo.—A 100-year-old hydroelectric project in Boulder could receive up to $1.18 million in federal stimulus money for upgrades and modernization projects.
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Wednesday announced up to $30.6 million in stimulus money for seven projects at existing hydropower facilities.
The proposal for the Boulder Canyon Hydroelectric Project would replace two older turbines with a single, high-efficiency unit. The new turbine is expected to help the plant generate 30 percent more power annually. The project also includes upgrades to wiring and asbestos removal.
The Energy Department says the projects are expected to begin next year.
