Denver-based Quark is launching a new software product that it says may create 500 jobs over five years.

Quark Promote is designed to help small businesses and individuals create marketing materials.

Company spokesman John Krantz said in an e-mail that the software “has the potential to be Quark’s most profitable line of business yet.”

“Quark anticipates that this new line of business will create upwards of 500 new Denver jobs over the next (three to five) years,” Krantz said.

The company plans to announce details Nov. 19.

Quark was founded in 1981 by Tim Gill, now a well-known political activist, with a $2,000 loan from his parents. The firm grew into a desktop-publishing powerhouse with 1,000 employees worldwide and annual revenue of more than $100 million. Gill left Quark in 2000 to pursue philanthropic endeavors. Over time, Quark boosted employment in India while trimming its workforce locally.

The company is perhaps best known for its desktop-publishing software, QuarkXPress.
