DENVER—The Tattered Cover Book Store plans to add used books to its shelves.

Despite its name, the independent book seller has never regularly stocked used books in its 35-year history.

The Tattered Cover will buy used books and offer sellers $1.50 or more in store credit for each one. General manager Matthew Miller says the store will sell used books for about half their original value though prices may vary according to a book’s need and condition.

Tattered Cover has three locations in metro Denver but at first only the store in Denver’s Lower Downtown will buy used books.

The move comes as independent bookstores try to find new ways to compete with chain bookstores and Internet book sellers.
