GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Grand Junction woman is on trial for allegedly killing her husband.

In opening statements Thursday, prosecutors said Miriam Helmick tried but failed to purchase a $1 million life insurance policy for her husband, who had a $250,000 insurance policy.

Six months later, in June of 2008, Alan Helmick was shot and killed in their Whitewater home. The 52-year-old Helmick is on trial for first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say the widow planted a phony threat to her own life after her husband’s death. Prosecutors will also argue that she did not try to revive him after calling 911 and reporting he’d been shot by a possible robber, even though an operator was directing her to try CPR.
