A 51-year-old convicted killer who fatally shot his ex-wife and fiancee 16 years ago in Oregon allegedly killed a 50-year-old inmate in a Cañon City prison, authorities say.

Kevin Lust was arrested after he attacked and killed Ronald Ferguson at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday in a cell house at Territorial Correctional Facility, said Katherine Sanguinetti, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Authorities are investigating the motive. Sanguinetti declined to say whether Lust had a weapon and how he allegedly killed Ferguson, who was serving a 25-year-prison term for a kidnapping and sexual-assault conviction in 1996 in Arapahoe County.

Lust was convicted in 1994 in Oregon and transferred to Colorado in 2000 through an interstate agreement, Sanguinetti said. After Wednesday’s killing, Lust was transferred to Colorado State Penitentiary, also in Cañon City. It is the state’s highest-security prison.

Lust has been disciplined several times. He was placed in segregation for five days in March after fighting. He was disciplined while at Limon Correctional Facility in June 2008 after making a threat, Sanguinetti said.
