DENVER—U.S. attorney nominee Stephanie Villafuerte has denied any role in using a restricted criminal database to help Gov. Bill Ritter’s campaign.
Stephanie Villafuerte has refused to answer questions from the media about what conversations she had two years ago about an illegal immigrant who became a controversial figure in race. But in a letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, the former Denver chief deputy district attorney says the answer to whether she used a database for campaign purposes “is emphatically no.”
Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Cory Voorhis was charged with accessing the database to check on Carlos Estrada-Medina and providing the information to Ritter’s opponent. He was later acquitted but lost his job.
The district attorney’s office also accessed the database to check on the immigrant’s records.
