A 44-year-old woman was in critical condition at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver on Wednesday after being repeatedly stabbed 2 miles southeast of Breckenridge earlier in the day.

Her alleged attacker also was in critical condition at the hospital.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to Illinois Gulch Road about 1:55 a.m. on a report of domestic violence, according to Pam Henderson, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, they found both the woman, whose identity was not released, and Steven Carter, 31, unconscious from multiple stab wounds. They were found in a hallway of the Wildflower complex, Henderson said.

Carter, who authorities say appeared to have repeatedly stabbed himself, was in custody at the hospital.

He is under investigation for attempted second-degree murder, domestic violence and violation of bail-bond conditions. Howard Pankratz, The Denver Post
