A Vail officer making what he thought was a routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 early today discovered that the motorist he pulled over had been stabbed.
The name of the stabbing victim, stopped by Vail officer Mark Allen at 1:35 a.m. on eastbound I-70, was not released by police.
Police said the man was pulled over for speeding and the officer noticed blood on his hands and chest.
However, after further investigation, it was determined the victim had been involved in an altercation with his roommates at a home on Alta Circle in Vail.
During the fight, Javier Huicar-Villa, 27, of Vail, pulled a knife and stabbed the 33-year-old victim, police said.
Huicar-Villa left the residence but was later located near the Vail Village Transportation Center where he was arrested.
The victim was taken to the Vail Valley Medical Center where he was treated for multiple stab wounds and released.
Huicar-Villa is being held at the Eagle County Jail for investigation of felony assault.
