PUEBLO, Colo.—Wastewater officials in Pueblo say an estimated 323,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Arkansas River due to a valve malfunction at a wastewater treatment plant.
Officials say the spill happened around 5 p.m. Thursday evening at the James DiIorio Wastewater Reclamation Facility, nearly a mile downstream of the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River.
They say the spill happened when an automatic valve that switches chlorine feed from one bank of containers to another was activated. A plant employee manually bypassed the valve after an alarm sounded, and the chlorine feed was restored.
Test results on samples taken from the river weren’t expected until next week.
