DENVER—A man convicted in North Dakota for impersonating a lawyer is getting a new attorney to defend him against similar charges in Colorado.

Federal prosecutors say Howard O. Kieffer, of Duluth, Minn., falsely said on the Internet that he had a law degree. One of his former clients, Aspen resident Gwen Bergman, was convicted last year of hiring someone to try to kill her former husband, but she is appealing based on Kieffer’s conviction in North Dakota.

Kieffer was to be arraigned Friday in U.S. District Court in Denver on charges including making false statements, but the hearing was continued until Wednesday after his public defender withdrew because he had previously represented Bergman.
