CALGARY, Alberta — Chad Hedrick edged U.S. teammate Shani Davis to win the men’s 1,500 meters at a World Cup long-track speedskating event Friday.
Hedrick finished in 1 minute, 42.14 seconds with Davis just .05 of a second behind. Denny Morrison of Canada took third in 1:42.74.
Mika Poutala of Finland won the men’s 500 meters in 34.38, and Jenny Wolf of Germany won the women’s 500 in 37.33.
• Canada’s Jon Montgomery and Britain’s Shelley Rudman won World Cup skeleton races in Cesana Pariol, Italy.
Breckenridge’s Katie Uhlaender led the Americans with a fifth- place finish, and Eric Bernotas and Zach Lund tied for ninth among the men.
Yang takes Chevron lead
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Y.E. Yang fired a 7-under-par 65 for a 9-under 135 total and two-shot lead after the second round of the Chevron World Challenge.
Padraig Harrington (68), Ian Poulter (69) and Kenny Perry (65) were tied for second at 137.
• Stuart Appleby shot consecutive 6-under 66s and held a two-stroke lead over Adam Scott (66—134) after the second round of the Australian Open in Sydney.
• Retief Goosen took a one- stroke lead over Angel Cabrera (67—138) at the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City, South Africa, shooting a 4-under 68 in the second round.
Mariners, Figgins reach deal
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners and third baseman Chone Figgins have a preliminary agreement on a $36 million, four-year contract.
The contract, which is subject to Figgins’ physical, includes a vesting option for 2014 that could make the deal worth $45 million over five years. Figgins had an on-base percentage of .395 with the Los Angeles Angels in 2009.
• Marco Scutaro and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a contract that guarantees the shortstop $12.5 million over two seasons or $14 million over three. Scutaro, who hit .282 with 12 homers and 60 RBIs with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009, replaces Alex Gonzalez, who signed with the Blue Jays after Boston declined his $6 million option.
Pacquiao-Mayweather bout in works
NEW YORK — Manny Pacquiao is likely to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 after agreeing to a proposal from promoter Bob Arum.
Oddsmakers are already taking bets on the fight, with most making Mayweather a slight favorite.
