The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan stopped admitting new child, adolescent and geriatric patients Dec. 1 and will shutter its child and adolescent wings Jan. 1, leaving the parents of Colorado’s most severely mentally ill children worried where their kids will receive care.
The closures, which include beds for 16 children, 18 adolescents and 25 elderly, are a part of state budget cuts announced in August.
State mental-health officials say there are adequate treatment options for young patients at such facilities as Denver Health Medical Center, Children’s Hospital or Cedar Springs Hospital in Colorado Springs. The state also has 17 community mental-health centers that can help.
This article has been corrected in this online archive. Originally, due to a 9News reporting error, this story inaccurately described the status of patient care at the Colorado
Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan. The facility stopped
admitting new child, adolescent and geriatric patients Dec. 1 but
continues to serve other adult patients.
