CARBONDALE, Colo.—An old wooden bridge locals in Garfield County call the “Pink Bridge” is due for repairs that could allow it to reopen to traffic for the first time in years.
The 110-year-old span over the Roaring Fork River has received a Colorado Historical Society grant of almost $300,000 for repairs. Garfield County plans to pay for the rest of the $595,000 repair project. The county says the “Pink Bridge” repairs could be complete by next summer.
The bridge was originally built in 1900 at a cost of $2,335. It has been closed to vehicle traffic since 1994, and to pedestrian traffic in 2003.
The bridge was once painted dark pink, though the color has faded. Plans call for the bridge to reopen to foot and bicycle traffic, but not vehicle traffic.
