ASPEN, Colo.—The botched release of a chemical from the Aspen water treatment plant will cost the city nearly $87,000 in cleanup expenses and more than $30,000 in fines.
The plant released 1,500 gallons of caustic soda last month to clean sewer lines, but the concentration of the chemical reached unacceptable levels about four hours later.
Chuck Bailey, the water treatment supervisor, says it’s not clear what went wrong.
The City Council approved the cleanup money last week.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment set the fine. The council hasn’t yet allocated money to pay it.
