The International Air Transport Association estimates the world’s airlines will lose $5.6 billion next year, up from the previous forecast of $3.8 billion.
The trade group, which predicts an $11 billion loss this year, said Tuesday “the worst is likely behind us,” although fuel costs are rising again.
U.S. carriers are projected to lose $2 billion in 2010, down from $2.9 billion in 2009. European airlines will generate the largest losses of any region at $2.5 billion, down from $3.5 billion in 2009.
