Three young men who allegedly tried to open doors of parked cars in the Stonegate subdivision in Parker have been taken into custody after the car they were in was found to contain an assortment of purses, backpacks and ID and credit cards.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department said a resident of the Stonegate subdivision spotted two young men walking about 5 a.m. Sunday in the 10000 block of Granite Hill Drive trying to open car doors. They were being followed by a car which picked up the young men after they had tried numerous car handles.
Responding to phone calls, deputies spotted the car and pulled the vehicle over. In the car were two male juveniles – ages 16 and 17 – and one 18-year-old man.
Also found in the car were numerous electronic items and cell phones.
The trio are currently being held for investigation of theft by receiving, fraud-identity theft, and criminal possession of financial devices.
No reports of trespasses or burglaries have been reported in Stonegate. Detectives believe the items may have been taken earlier in the night, possibly in Arapahoe County, south Aurora and south Jefferson County.
Douglas County Sheriff David A. Weaver said in a statement that the arrests should serve as a reminder that there are people out at all hours trying to victimize innocent citizens.
“This situation should also remind us that we need to take extra care to make sure our vehicles are locked,” said Weaver.
People with information about the case, or who believe they may have been victimized, are asked to call Detective Greg Howden at 303-784-7818.
