Because of a sour economy, donations to Toys for Tots are down as the number of parents struggling to make the season merry for their children has climbed.
The Marine Corps Reserve toy program collects donated toys and distributes them to nonprofit organizations, which then give them to needy families.
Toys for Tots used to receive requests for about 50,000 toys in the metro area during the holiday season, but the demand has risen to about 75,000, said Marine Gunnery Sgt. Victor Escobar.
The warehouse used by Toys for Tots in the metro area is at 12601 E. 33rd Ave. in Aurora.
“Everybody has heard of the movie ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’ ” Escobar said. “We would like to get a miracle on 33rd street.” Tom McGhee, The Denver Post
