Many major airlines are offering no-advance-purchase airfares for travel throughout the 48 contiguous states and Canada through Jan. 4, according to Tom Parsons, chief executive of the discount travel site .

Parsons said airlines waiving the rules include American, United, Delta, Northwest, US Airways, Frontier, AirTran and Midwest.

Unlike standard fare sales where travel must be on a Tuesday or Wednesday to qualify, this sale is date-specific for the lowest airfares.

Travel must be done on the following dates:

• Dec. 25, and Jan. 1 and 4 for the cheapest airfares.

• Dec. 18, 20, 21, 24, 30 and 31 — the second-cheapest airfares — are about 30 percent higher than the lowest fares.

• Dec. 19, 23, 26, 28 and 29 — the third-cheapest — are about 55 percent higher than the lowest airfares.

Parsons said Dec. 27 and Jan. 2 and 3 have not been included in the holiday airfare sale and could be significantly more expensive. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
