GOLDEN, Colo.—A 3-year-old boy who was rescued after being pinned under a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot remains hospitalized.

The mother and grandmother of Joshua Johnson said he was in serious condition Monday and “not out of the woods, yet.”

Witnesses say the boy got away from his grandmother in the parking lot Saturday and then bent down, apparently to pick something up, when he was run over by a shopper looking for a parking spot. He was wedged between the chassis of the 1996 Toyota Corolla and the ground.

Off-duty firefighter and paramedic Scott Martin and five other people lifted the car, and then Martin crawled under and freed him.

The boy’s family is urging people to take a moment to pay attention to their surroundings during the fast pace of the holidays.
