Despite plenty of signs to the contrary, Mitch Berger will continue to be the Broncos’ punter Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
For a few hours there, it appeared the Broncos punter might get the boot. First, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said at his press conference Monday that he wasn’t happy with Berger’s performance during the team’s 30-27 loss to Philadelphia.
“We did not punt the ball particularly well,” McDaniels said Monday. “We didn’t allow many return yards, but still didn’t affect field position the way that we would hope to.”
Then, the team on Tuesday brought in rookie punter Britton Colquitt, officially signing him to their 53-man roster Wednesday.
But McDaniels said Wednesday that Berger would be his punter Sunday in the regular-season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Colquitt apparently was signed for future considerations as there are no plans to activate him on the 45-man game day roster.
“Berger’s still punting,” McDaniels said. So why re-sign Colquitt, who was cut in training camp?
A big reason is Berger is 37, and unlikely to return to the Broncos next year. So if the Broncos are going to need a punter for next season, why not get him now?
“We never stop trying to improve the team or look as we move forward,” McDaniels said.
