Fort Collins police have released the names of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a kidnapping suspect.
The shooting happened New Year’s Day at 243 N. College Ave. when the suspect, Dennis Cox, 50, pointed a gun at the officers, police said in a media release.
The three officers are: Sgt. Dan Murphy, a 21-year veteran; Det. Gar Haugo, a 7-year veteran; Officer Marcus Hopkins, a 13-year veteran.
None of the officers, who are all Fort Collins Police Department SWAT members, were injured.
The investigation is ongoing and the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
Cox was a suspect in the Tuesday kidnapping of Julie Ann Kilgore, a 48-year-old Brighton nurse.
Cox had taken Kilgore across a state line, to a hotel in Laramie, Wyo., where he held her against her will for four days and three nights. The couple had been dating prior to the incident. They had known each other since 1975, when they attended the same junior high school in Brighton.
The FBI had been searching for Cox because the kidnapping crossed state lines. Fort Collins police were assisting in the capture of Cox after Kilgore escaped.
Witnesses with information on the shooting are asked to call Fort Collins police at 970 221-6582.
