A sheriff’s deputy shot a man this morning in unincorporated Arapahoe County after responding to a report of a “barricaded” and armed man.

Deputies and a trooper with the Colorado State Patrol were called about 7:10 a.m. to 77 South Tom Bay Road by a man who said he and his wife had been held hostage all night by their adult son. The man had escaped and called 911, but his wife was still in the house.

When officials arrived at the address — south of Interstate 70, between Watkins and Bennett — they were “confronted” by an “armed subject,” according to a media release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. The man was outside the house and “resportedly high on drugs.”

The man did not obey commands and attacked the deputy, who shot the man.

He was identified as Danny Barber, 45. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The deputy, who was not named, fired more than one round, said Undersheriff Mark Campbell.

Troopers routinely assist deputies on calls in the rural area where the incident occurred, Campbell said.

An investigation into the shooting has been turned over to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.
