A 31-year-old Denver man has been charged in the death of an 18-month- old child in his care.
Jacob Garcia was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.
Denver police were called Dec. 29 to the 1300 block of South Stuart Street on a report of a child not breathing.
Garcia told police the boy ran into a hallway and fell, according to court documents.
Doctors at Denver Health Medical Center who saw the toddler believe the victim suffered “subdural bleeding in the brain” and “bruises throughout his body,” according to a probable-cause statement in the case.
Garcia, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, told investigators he put the boy in a tub and ran cold water in an attempt to revive him before calling 911 for help.
Garcia is being held at the Denver jail without bail. He is scheduled to make a court appearance Friday. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
