DENVER—A 25-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in a Denver shooting that police say involved a medical-marijuana transaction.

Peter Bellar is accused of shooting 59-year-old Douglass Singleton while trying to rob his home early Tuesday morning. Bellar was also wounded during the shooting.

A friend said Singleton was a Vietnam veteran who had registered as a medical marijuana patient with the state a few months ago. Patients with a state-issued card are allowed to grow their own marijuana or to obtain the drug from a designated caregiver.
