LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Colorado Christian University is withdrawing its bid to build a new campus on open space in Highlands Ranch, following opposition from residents concerned about traffic, property values, loss of wildlife habitat and other issues.

The university last fall reached out to the Highlands Ranch Community Association to explore buying 100 acres from it for a new campus. University President Bill Armstrong said Tuesday that Colorado Christian abandoned the idea after it became clear the association likely wouldn’t sell.

Colorado Christian says it is still considering at least three other sites or redeveloping its existing 30-acre Lakewood campus, which has about 900 students.
