TORONTO — Goaltender Curtis Joseph retired Tuesday, ending a 19-year career in the NHL in which he was No. 4 on the career victory list.
Joseph, 42, is the winningest goalie to have never won the Stanley Cup. He had 454 victories, trailing only Martin Brodeur (585), Patrick Roy (551) and Ed Belfour (484).
He said he had a “great career” and “didn’t leave anything on the table.”
League to review accusations against referee
TORONTO — The NHL is looking into Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows’ claim that a referee made payback calls against him.
The league said Colin Campbell, the NHL’s top disciplinarian, was reviewing the matter. Burrows accused Stephane Auger of targeting him in the Canucks’ 3-2 loss to the Predators on Monday.
Burrows said Auger told him during the pregame warmup he was going to “get me back” for a Dec. 8 incident. Nashville’s Jerred Smithson received a major and game misconduct for charging Burrows, but the call was later overturned by the league because it said Burrows took a dive.
On Monday, Auger called Burrows for diving and interference in the third period. A 10-minute misconduct followed with four seconds left in the game.
TV producer suspended for not showing replay
PITTSBURGH — FSN Pittsburgh has indefinitely suspended a longtime hockey producer for not quickly showing a replay that could have caused a short-handed goal to be awarded to Flyers forward Simon Gagne against the Penguins last Thursday.
The producer, Lowell MacDonald Jr., is a former lead hockey producer at ESPN and is the son of former Penguins forward Lowell MacDonald.
Gagne’s shot appeared to cross the goal line while Penguins goalie Brent Johnson was covering it during the second period of the Flyers’ 7-4 victory, but the on-ice officials did not signal a goal. TV replays made available to NHL officials in Toronto were inconclusive.
Moments after play resumed, FSN Pittsburgh aired a replay from an overhead camera that showed the puck crossing the goal line. A call cannot be reversed by use of replay once play has started.
TV rights holders are required to make available all angles of a disputed play. Comcast Sports Net Philadelphia also aired the game, but only FSN Pittsburgh’s telecast contained video from the overhead camera.
