A number of airlines have hiked bag fees and fuel surcharges in the past week.

On Wednesday, United Airlines matched checked-bag fee increases at Delta, US Airways and Continental.

Beginning Jan. 21, United will charge $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag. Both are up $5.

Checking in bags online will save $2 for the first bag and $3 for the second bag.

United, Delta, Continental and American also have raised fuel surcharges by $20 per round trip on travel to Europe.

Republic Airways, parent of Frontier, Midwest, Lynx and Chautauqua airlines, has instituted a $3 fuel surcharge to counter rising oil prices.

“At $83, the price of oil now stands at a near 18-month high,” Republic chief executive Bryan Bedford told employees in his weekly newsletter last week. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
