SAN DIEGO — Like it or not, Chargers fans, coach Norv Turner will be sticking around for four more years.
The Chargers announced Monday night that the oft-maligned coach is getting a three-year contract extension through 2013.
The extension came just more than 24 hours after the Chargers were shocked 17-14 by the Jets in the divisional playoffs, renewing calls by some fans for Turner to be fired.
Turner’s regular-season record with San Diego is 32-16, but his overall record is sub-.500, at 90-98-1.
• Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was handcuffed briefly and had his car impounded after a traffic stop Sunday just a few hours before San Diego lost to the Jets, police said.
Det. Gary Hassen said a traffic officer pulled over Jackson for playing loud music. The former Northern Colorado standout was cited for driving with a suspended license and expired tags. Jackson was briefly handcuffed, which Hassen said is part of standard procedure in such situations.
The traffic stop occurred near Chargers headquarters, about 2 miles north of Qualcomm Stadium. Jackson had to catch a ride to the game with quarterback Philip Rivers.
“Billy and I carpool,” Rivers said, referring to backup quarterback Billy Volek. “Vincent joined in.”
Ellis facing surgery on hand
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis has a broken left hand that will require surgery, but he expects to play in Sunday’s AFC championship game against the Colts.
Ellis was injured on the Jets’ first defensive play in their victory at San Diego on Sunday. He said Monday that his hand “just gave out” when he was blocked by an offensive lineman.
“I tried to just finish that series out,” Ellis said. “Then, once I got to the sideline, I was like, ‘You know what, my hand is broken.’ Then, they checked and were like, ‘Yeah, you’re right, it is.’ “
Ellis, third on the team’s career sacks list, had the hand placed in a cast that was wrapped like a club and he returned to the game. X-rays after the game confirmed the extent of the injury.
He said he will have surgery to insert screws into the hand after the game against the Colts, whether the Jets win or lose. If the Jets win Sunday, Ellis’ hand would have two weeks to heal before the Super Bowl.
Edwards nursing injury
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s victory over Dallas, appearing to hurt his right knee. He returned for a few plays, then was done for the day.
Coach Brad Childress declined to elaborate on the injury but said Edwards is “a tough guy” and if he’s able to, he will play Sunday against the Saints.
Bills talking with Gailey.
Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier interviewed for the Bills’ head coaching position last week and reportedly was the “leader in the clubhouse.”
But Fox Sports NFL writer Jay Glazer reported the Bills are in serious talks with former Cowboys head coach Chan Gailey and that he could be named coach in the next few days.
Footnotes.
Panthers receivers coach Richard Williamson, who joined the team in its inaugural season in 1995, announced his retirement.
• The 49ers hired veteran NFL and college coach Kurt Schottenheimer as special-teams coordinator.
