WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama called on people to recommit themselves to doing their part in making the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream a reality. The nation’s first black president spoke Monday evening during a musical celebration of King’s legacy at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Obama said it was fitting to celebrate King’s legacy with song, saying music played an important role in the civil- rights movement. He cited the spiritual “We Shall Overcome” as an example.
The Obama family earlier served lunch to the needy as a way to pay tribute to King. The president also held a discussion at the White House with black elders and their grandchildren about the push for racial equality that King led until he was assassinated in 1968.
