Trevor Wikre, the former Mesa State offensive guard who opted for a finger amputation over reconstructive surgery that would have ended his college playing career, was named today as a Colorado State grad assistant.
The 2009 Mesa State grad started four years for the Mavericks. Midway through his 2008 senior season, he suffered a compound dislocation of his right pinky finger. Instead of undergoing career ending surgery, he missed only the next game.
At the time he said: “Sometimes, you realize that you miss your pinky. I mean, I’ve had it for 21 years. But in the long run, my ring finger will take over for what the pinky used to do. Like I said, it’s not that big a deal. I just wanted to play football with my teammates. I couldn’t let them down.”
Wikre, who is a Berthoud High grad, replaces ex-Ram defensive back Jason Gallimore, who is changing careers to law enforcement.
