ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have hired Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator, Matt LaFleur as quarterbacks coach and Jon Embree as tight ends coach.

The appointment of Shanahan, son of head coach Mike Shanahan, had been known, but the team did not formally announce it until Wednesday. The younger Shanahan had been the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator.

Mike Shanahan called it “a thrill” to have Kyle Shanahan on his staff, “not only because it represents a chance to work with my son.”

LaFleur worked with Kyle Shanahan as an offensive assistant for the Texans the last two seasons.

Embree, who played at the University of Colorado, was the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight ends coach from 2006-08.

Injured Brady out of Pro Bowl.

Tom Brady has pulled out of the Pro Bowl after a season in which he played with rib and finger injuries. He has been replaced by Matt Schaub of the Texans.

Schaub, named to his first Pro Bowl, completed 396-of-583 passes for 4,770 yards, all the most in the NFL. He ranked fourth with a 67.9 completion percentage and seventh with a 98.6 passer rating.

• Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has turned down a chance to play in the Pro Bowl because of a right shoulder problem that developed late in the season.

Roethlisberger was the first alternate for the AFC and would have gone in place of Brady.

Coach Mike Tomlin later said he doesn’t think Roethlisberger will require any medical procedures to correct the problem.

• New York Giants receiver Steve Smith will replace Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald (knee) on the NFC Pro Bowl team, making Smith the Giants’ first wideout to be selected for the Pro Bowl since Homer Jones in 1968.

• San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore has been added to the NFC squad for the Pro Bowl, replacing injured Rams running back Steven Jackson (back).

Raiders interviewing.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has started interviewing potential assistants for next season even while he continues to mull the fate of coach Tom Cable.

reported the Raiders have spoken to Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh about becoming their head coach, sources inside and outside the organization said, but Harbaugh did not express interest in the job.

reported the team interviewed recently fired New York Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle, who held the same position in Oakland in 1998-2003, to replace Dwaine Board as line coach for the Raiders.

“A lot of people have called inquiring about coaching positions,” senior executive John Herrera said.

Herrera denied a report in the San Francisco Chronicle that Davis has interviewed Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman as potential coaching candidates.
