Lawmakers on Friday passed a resolution calling for a comprehensive study of the state’s tax system, something that hasn’t been done in more than 50 years.
The measure, SJR 2, asks the University of Denver to take on the task, which would be privately funded and could cost millions of dollars.
The study would look at the state’s current tax system and how it relates to state services and the economy.
Some critics have said the state’s tax system is outmoded, citing as an example the general lack of taxes on services, which now represent a much larger portion of the economy than in decades past.
The study, which lawmakers want completed by 2011, also would look at the state’s system of tax credits and incentives, as well as the overall tax burdens on individuals and businesses.
The last time a similar study was conducted was 1958.
