DENVER—A proposal aimed at preventing recreational users from getting medical marijuana cards is moving ahead at the Capitol despite the protests of many patients.
On Wednesday a legislative committee backed a bill requiring doctors to give medical marijuana patients a full exam and provide follow-up care. The bill would also bar doctors from setting up shop in dispensaries.
A vote in the full Senate is expected Friday.
Patients who rely on the Veterans Administration and federally-funded clinics say their doctors can’t recommend medical marijuana. They say paying for exams by other doctors will be too expensive.
Senators voted to waive the $90 annual card fee for those who can’t afford it and will look at whether dispensaries could reimburse veterans for their doctor visits.
